Problem
Insufficient shade in our cities exposes most city dwellers to extreme heat. This leads to discomfort and health problems, significantly impacting the overall quality of life.
Opportunity
Shade infrastructure that provides pedestrian-friendly walkways with cooling effects. Addressing
nature-deficit disorder in cities, which will enhance urban well-being.
Objective
To conceptualize and develop an innovative urban intervention leveraging emerging technologies to reintegrate nature into urban environments, mitigate air pollution, and enhance the well-being of
city residents.
Materials
Growing up in rural Philippines, I noticed how urban America lacks a connection to nature amid rapid development. Urbanization brings nature deprivation and air pollution, causing 6.7 million deaths annually. With 68% of people projected to live in cities by 2050, reintegrating nature is crucial. Algavita offers promising solutions for healthier, sustainable urban spaces.
